“Welcome back, family! What a joy it is to see both of our founding families here for the second week of our new fellowship!
Last week, we celebrated God’s Blueprint for New Beginnings. We stood on the promise of Isaiah 43:19—that God is doing a New Thing in our midst. We decided to Forget the Former Things and step onto the New Exodus path.
But here is the spiritual challenge: What happens after the beginning?
The launch is exciting, but the real work—the work of enduring—requires more than excitement. A great building requires a strong foundation, not just a beautiful first brick. The Manna God gave us yesterday doesn’t feed us today.
Today, we ask: How do we hold the line? How does a small, new fellowship like ours ensure it doesn’t just start well, but survives and thrives?
The answer is found in our passage today, Acts 2:42-47. This passage is the blueprint for a thriving, enduring fellowship. It shows us what the very first followers of Jesus did once the Holy Spirit had given them their “new beginning” on the Day of Pentecost.
They didn’t just meet; they ‘continued steadfastly.’ That is the key phrase. They committed. They devoted themselves.
To sustain this New Exodus journey, we must devote ourselves to Four Pillars of Endurance.
I. Pillar One: Enduring in Truth
“The very first thing they devoted themselves to was ‘the apostles’ doctrine.’ (Acts 2:42)
This means they were committed to Truth. Not cultural opinions, not passing trends, but the solid, unchanging teaching of the Gospel delivered through the apostles—the Word of God.
The Lesson for Our Fellowship: Our New Exodus journey requires a reliable map. The spiritual wilderness is disorienting! When we face challenges—whether it’s disagreement, disappointment, or doubt—we don’t run to Google, we don’t run to gossip; we run to the Word of God.
The Word is the anchor that stops our small ship from drifting away from God’s purpose. Every time we gather, we commit to opening this book and submitting our feelings, our plans, and our very lives to its authority. Truth is non-negotiable.
Action Statement: Our commitment to the Word of God is our ultimate commitment to the New Thing He is doing.”
II. Pillar Two: Enduring in Community
“The second devotion was ‘to fellowship’ (Acts 2:42) and ‘having all things in common.’ (Acts 2:44)
The word for fellowship, koinonia, means more than just a social gathering after service; it means shared life. They shared meals, shared resources, and shared burdens. They truly lived their Exodus journey together.
The Lesson for Our Fellowship: This is especially vital for us, as we are starting small. We are not just two families who meet for devotion; we are an interconnected community. We are an Outpost of Life for one another.
This means we must commit to honesty—sharing our real struggles, not just our highlights. This means we must practice radical generosity—sharing not just what we have leftover, but what we have in common.
The world is lonely. Our fellowship must be the opposite of lonely. It must be a sanctuary where no one carries their burden alone. We commit to showing up for each other, not just on Sunday, but throughout the week. We walk the wilderness together!
Scripture Check: Acts 2:44 says, ‘All who believed were together, and had all things in common.’ This is our standard.”
III. Pillar Three: Enduring in Worship
“The third pillar is endurance in worship: ‘the breaking of bread and to prayer.’ (Acts 2:42)
This speaks to the two core activities of Christian life: Communion (the breaking of bread) and Communication (prayer).
The early believers recognized that the New Exodus work was too big for them. We are just two families, and the vision God has given us—to be streams in the wasteland—is much bigger than our combined ability, budget, or wisdom.
The Power of Prayer: Prayer is not what we do after we run out of options; it is our first and primary work. It is the spiritual engine that drives the New Thing.
Action Statement: We must be a praying fellowship. Every time we gather, let our prayers be fervent, trusting that the power that created the cosmos and parted the Red Sea can change the hearts of our neighbors and sustain our work. We rely on the Divine Provision.“
IV. Pillar Four: Enduring in Impact
“Finally, their endurance led to impact: ‘And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.’ (Acts 2:47)
Notice the divine order: They were committed to the Word, committed to community, and committed to worship. And then, as a result of that internal health and devotion, God added the increase.
The Lesson for Our Fellowship: We are called to be an attractive fellowship, not just a comfortable one. When we truly live out the first three pillars in Fiji—when we are deeply committed to one another and to the Word—the world will see it!
Acts 2:47 says they ‘enjoyed the favor of all the people.’
Our commitment to Christ and to each other will be evident. It will draw people in because they will see something real and true. We don’t have to chase members; we just have to be a healthy, vibrant body—a true Life-Giving Outpost—and God will do the adding. The increase is His responsibility. Our devotion is ours.
Conclusion
“Last week was the glorious beginning of the New Exodus. This week is the crucial call to hold the line.
We sustain this new work by dedicating ourselves, not just to meeting, but to four enduring commitments, flowing from our New Creation identity:
-
Truth: Enduring in the Apostles’ Teaching.
-
Community: Enduring in Shared Life.
-
Worship: Enduring in Prayer and Communion.
-
Impact: Enduring in Health, allowing God to add the increase.
Let us stand and commit together to these pillars. May we be a fellowship that does not just start well, but endures well, and multiplies because of our steadfast devotion to Christ.”
Heavenly Father,
we thank You for the truth You have given us today from the book of Acts. You are the God of New Beginnings, but You are also the God of Endurance.
We commit ourselves to holding the line. Give us the discipline to remain steadfast in Your Truth—anchoring our lives daily in Your Word. Strengthen our Community, making us honest and generous, so that this fellowship becomes a true sanctuary of shared life.
Empower our Worship! Make our prayers fervent and our communication with You constant, knowing that the power of the New Exodus comes not from our resources, but from Your Spirit.
We ask, Lord, that as we remain healthy and devoted to these pillars, You would fulfill Your promise: Add to our number daily those who are being saved.
May we not just start well, but endure well, for the glory of Christ, our Sustainer.
Amen.
