Bible Study Tuesday 18th November 2025: What Is Grace?

Grace is God's Unearned Favor (representing Ephesians 28-9)

Introduction: More Than Just "Nice"

When we hear the word “grace,” we often think of something gentle or simply being kind. But in the Bible, grace is a powerful, active word that shows us the very heart of God. It’s not just a feeling; it’s how God acts towards us. It’s the most amazing gift we could ever receive, and it changes everything.

Let’s dive into God’s Word to truly understand this life-changing truth.

I. Grace is God's Unearned Favor

The most basic meaning of grace in the Bible is God’s favor or kindness that we don’t deserve and can never earn. It’s not a reward for good behavior. It’s a gift freely given.

Bible Verse:

  • Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV): “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”

Description & Teaching:

Think about a gift you received that you didn’t ask for and definitely didn’t work for. Maybe someone surprised you with something wonderful. That’s a bit like God’s grace. We are sinners; we have all made mistakes and gone against God’s rules. We deserve punishment, not kindness. Yet, God chooses to pour out His goodness on us anyway. He doesn’t look at what we’ve done wrong and then decide if we’re “good enough” for His love. He simply offers His love, forgiveness, and salvation because He is good, not because we are. This unearned favor is the starting point of our relationship with Him.

II. Grace is God's Active Power

Grace is not just a gentle idea; it’s a strong, active power from God that helps us. It doesn’t just forgive our past; it empowers our present and future. It gives us the strength to live for God.

Bible Verse:

  • 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV): “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
  • Titus 2:11-12 (NIV): “For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.”

Description & Teaching:
Sometimes we think that once we become a Christian, we have to try really hard in our own strength to be good. But the Bible teaches that God’s grace doesn’t just save us, it also helps us. It’s like a constant supply of spiritual energy. When we feel weak or tempted to do wrong, God’s grace gives us the strength to choose what is right. It teaches us how to live. It’s not just a pass; it’s a coach. This powerful grace helps us change from the inside out, making us more like Jesus every day. It transforms us.

III. Grace is Found in Jesus Christ

The ultimate example and source of God’s grace is Jesus Christ. He is God’s grace in human form. Through His life, death, and resurrection, God’s grace became fully clear and available to everyone.

Bible Verse:

  • John 1:14 (NIV): “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

  • Romans 5:8 (NIV): “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Description & Teaching:

You can’t talk about grace without talking about Jesus. Jesus didn’t come to just give us rules; He came to show us God’s amazing love and kindness. His entire life was an act of grace. He healed people who didn’t deserve it. He forgave people who had betrayed Him. And then, on the cross, He paid the price for our sins—a price we could never pay ourselves. This was the ultimate act of grace. So, if you want to experience God’s grace, you look to Jesus. He is the door to this incredible gift. Everything God offers us through grace comes through Christ.

IV. Grace Leads to New Life and Purpose

When we receive God’s grace, it doesn’t just forgive us; it gives us a brand new life with a new purpose. We are not just saved from something (sin and punishment); we are saved for something (to live for God’s glory and serve Him).

Bible Verse:

  • Ephesians 2:10 (NIV): “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

  • Romans 6:14 (NIV): “For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.”

Description & Teaching:

Imagine being trapped in a dark prison, and someone not only opens the door but also gives you a map to a beautiful, new life outside. That’s what grace does. It frees us from the power of sin, which used to control us. Now, because we are under grace, we have the freedom and the desire to live differently. God has a special plan and good works for each of us to do, and His grace enables us to do them. It’s a life of joy and meaningful purpose, all given by Him. We are not just forgiven passengers; we are active participants in God’s plan.

Conclusion: Living in Grace

So, what is grace? It is God’s unearned favor, His active power, shown to us perfectly in Jesus Christ, leading us to a new life and purpose. It’s the most important truth for every Christian. It’s not something we earn or something we can lose by making a mistake. It is constant, always available.

Because of grace, we can have peace with God. Because of grace, we have strength for every challenge. Because of grace, we have hope for eternity. Let’s live each day trusting in this amazing gift, allowing it to change our hearts and guide our steps.

Heavenly Father,

We are humbled by the truth of Your Grace.
Thank You for the unearned favor that saved us, not because of anything we did, but because of Your great love shown through Jesus Christ. We confess that we often try to earn what You have already freely given. Forgive us for striving in our own strength.

We ask now for Your active power. When we feel weak, when we are tempted, or when we face difficult days, help us to rely completely on Your grace, knowing it is sufficient for us.

May the reality of Your kindness change the way we live, the way we speak, and the way we treat others. Help us to share the grace we have received.

In the name of Jesus, our source of grace and truth, we pray.

Amen.
